Who Can Apply
To qualify for the E‑2 visa, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of Taiwan
- Make a substantial investment in a real and operating U.S. business
- Own at least 50% of the business or have operational control
- Show that the business is structured to generate income and support U.S. jobs
- Intend to leave the U.S. once visa status ends
Passive or speculative investments are not eligible. The business must be active and capable of sustaining operations.
Application Steps

- Complete the DS‑160 form online
- Schedule an interview with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT)
- Prepare and submit documentation showing business readiness, investment details, and lawful source of funds
Visa Duration and Family Members
Taiwanese E‑2 visas are typically issued for up to five years and can be renewed as long as the business remains eligible. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 may apply for E‑2 dependent status. Spouses may also request authorization to work in the U.S.
